Sree Sreenivasan: Chief Digital Officer at Columbia University (now at the Met)

“No other piece of technology has swept through academia and caused as much hype, consternation, and panic in such a short period.”

The technology in question relates to MOOCs: Massive Open Online Courses. And that pronouncement was made by Sree Sreenivasan, former Chief Digital Officer at Columbia University (and now Chief Digital Officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art), one of the participants on the Education Panel held at the inaugural Chief Digital Officer Summit in February 2013 at Thomson Reuters world headquarters at 3 Times Square in New York City.

Accompanying Sreenivasan on the panel were Perry Hewitt, Chief Digital Officer at Harvard University; and Bernardo Rodriguez, the CDO at Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions. David Mathison, founder of the CDO Club, served as moderator.

The CDO Summit is the “must-attend” digital event of the year. The 2013 and 2014 CDO Summits received stellar endorsements from dozens of speakers and attendees alike:

“Sometimes a conference comes along that hits the trifecta – hot topic, high-caliber attendees, and stellar location. The first Chief Digital Officer Summit reached that mark with ease, and I look forward to attending the next one.”
Eric Hellweg

Harvard Business Review

“The Chief Digital Officer Summit was outstanding. Why? Candid panels with top players in the digital community. Splendid break-time conversations. And, savvy facilitation, Mathison Style.”

“David, here’s a handy C^3 test for conference value: Did I learn at least three new perspectives? Check. Did I meet at least three interesting people? Check. Did I take back at least three relevant pieces of news I can use? Check. Flying colors for the Chief Digital Officer Summit 2013! Thank you so much, and yes, I’d be very pleased to participate next year!”
Perry Hewitt
Chief Digital Officer
Harvard University

“Congratulations on an exceptional first CDO Summit. I truly enjoyed all the panel discussions as well as the intimate environment where I was able to meet such amazing people. The conversations were very enlightening and touched on all the challenges my team and I face on a technology, content, and culture front. I look forward to participating next year.”

Online education has been growing by leaps and bounds. This was incredibly informative to hear the experts talk about the future of MOOCs and how that will impact education for the masses globally.

  • BlakeGarten

Bernardo Rodriguez makes a good point saying that vocational students stand to gain much from online learning.

  • Robert Stack

As someone that taught in classrooms at the University level I see no way of avoiding the simple fact that Massive Open Online Courses are altering the landscape of education and how it is delivered. Either academia embraces digital delivery or they will face being obsolete.

    • Robert Berkman

Robert–I am sure that the majority of those in education agree with your statement–the challenge will be *how* to do so, in a manner that preserves academic quality and the traditional “out of the classroom” critical but intangible benefits that universities have always offered as well. We are still very early into the experimental stage with all of this.
