Our 11th CDAO Summit on Oct 1, 2024 is bookended by two panels that will explore how Chief Data and Analytics Officers (CDAOs) are using data and AI to protect and serve the nation and its people.
The opening panel will describe how CDAOs are using data and AI to protect the country, and the closing panel will show how CDAOs are using data and AI to protect people and consumers.
The first panel is on "Data-Driven Defense: The CDAOs Role in Advancing Ethical AI + Data Strategies to Strengthen National Security, Preparedness, and Global Competitiveness."
In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, the role of the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO) is pivotal in ensuring that data and AI strategies are not only effective but also ethical and responsible.
This panel brings together top leaders from the U.S. military and intelligence communities to discuss how they are leveraging data and AI to enhance national defense, preparedness, and global competitiveness.
These experts will share insights into the challenges and opportunities they face in implementing data-driven strategies that align with national security objectives while adhering to the highest ethical standards.

The panel includes the following all-star participants:
Dr. Delester Brown Jr.: Chief Data Officer at the National Guard Bureau will explore how data strategies are being developed to strengthen national defense capabilities. From 2021-2023, Dr. Brown was Chief Data Officer at the Army National Guard (ARNG), where he established a digital culture while cultivating a data-centric workforce across ARNG, including the synchronization of data efforts across the ARNG. Dr. Brown was previously Chief Technology Officer at ARNG.
Marie Falkowski: Deputy CDO for the Intelligence Community (IC), Office of the Director of National Intelligence will discuss her work in implementing advanced technologies across the IC to provide the timely intelligence they need to achieve their objectives, protect the nation, and maintain a competitive edge in global power dynamics. Marie works with the IC, the DoD, industry, academia, foreign partners, and others to develop and implement data strategies, standards, and policies that facilitate the use of AI, ML, quantum, cloud computing, and other advanced tech.
Mark Brady: Deputy CDO for TRMC at KBR Inc. The TRMC at KBR provides testing and evaluation capabilities for the Department of Defense. Mark will provide insights from his experience at KBR and with the U.S. Space and Air Force, focusing on the critical role of data in space and defense operations. He was previously CDO of the U.S. Space Force; CDO of the Air Force Space Command; Data Architect for the Department of Justice; and Information Architect for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).
Paul Evangelista: CDO, United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point will share his extensive experience in decision science and data science for defense. Paul has over 20 years of experience in decision science, data science, operations research, and systems engineering, including leading and executing commercial and defense projects. He was previously a Colonel in the U.S. Army with several deployments that included operational and technical leadership positions. His PhD research involved early ML applications with an emphasis on anomaly detection.
Thomas Sasala: Deputy Director, Office of Enterprise Management, U.S. Army will offer perspectives from his role in the U.S. Army’s Office of Enterprise Management, and his previous role as CDO at the US Navy. Prior to his current postion, Thomas was Chief Data Officer at the U.S. Navy from 2019-2022 ; he was CDO and Director at the U.S. Army Architecture Integration Center from 2017-2019; and Chief Technology Officer at the U.S. Army Information Technology Agency from 2011-2015.
