Thanks to Kit Eaton at Inc. for quoting us in her recent article, "One Effect of the AI Revolution: The Number of Chief AI Officers Has Tripled. Growing numbers of companies now boast a new four-letter-acronym job in their C-suites, as CAIOs address the impact of this new technology.

New data from employment site LinkedIn shows the number of companies worldwide that now have a dedicated executive leading AI efforts has tripled over the past five years."
In a recent article titled The Rise of the Chief AI Officer, "The <Financial Times> newspaper quotes David Mathison, an entrepreneur who's founder and CEO of the world's first Chief AI Officer Summit, saying the job needs a person with a "deep understanding of AI tech, machine learning, data science, and analytics." It is, after all, a highly technical role that involves some truly cutting-edge tech--along with a grasp of the legal and change-management issues the technology brings with it."

"LinkedIn's data shows that the role is actually a fast-growing one, and as the Financial Times notes it's not just in tech companies. Since AI has applications in many aspects of business, it can change the fortunes of a health company or financial firm as much as those of a technology business."

"The threat of AI taking work away from human staff is underlined by news from tech news site Axios, whose CEO Jim VandeHei predicted in an interview with The Seattle Times that the surge in AI will "eviscerate the weak, the ordinary, the unprepared in media," and it's an existential threat "as profound, if not more profound, than moving from print to digital" presented to news and media organizations the world around."

"The Biden administration last month directly addressed the role of CAIOs in the workplace with a requirement that federal agencies had to appoint people to that role where they will, as the Financial Times notes, "ensure accountability, leadership, and oversight" over matters relating to AI. The Justice Department appointed an AI official in late February."

Tomorrow we will explore how, when, and why we started tracking Chief AI Officers, the current number of CAIOs, the challenges for companies and organizations looking to hire these executives, and how the CDO Club will launch a new service to "even the playing field" for C-level AI executives at SMBs, non-profits, and other organizations that have been priced out of the market for AI talent.

As Axios reported in DC's Hottest New Job: The Chief AI Officer, "Hundreds of agencies across the federal government are scrambling to find more than 400 chief AI officers by the end of the year. Why it matters: The requirement, one of the edicts of President Biden's recent AI executive order, aims to make sure every arm of government has a top exec who is ready to deal with AI. Driving the news: The Office of Management and Budget has released guidance to federal agencies on how to implement Biden's AI executive order — and how to hire a chief AI officer (CAIO) is on top of that list. The Executive Office of the President is also required to hire a Chief AI Officer."

Delegates, speakers, and sponsors can participate in one or both events.
