What Happened In New York City? The 7th NYC CDO Summit!

On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, the 7th annual NYC CDO Summit was held in the Roone Arledge Auditorium in Alfred Lerner Hall at Columbia University in New York City, USA.

The NYC summit was kicked off by David Mathison, Founder of the CDO Summit/CDO Club, who welcomed the delegates and presented his keynote on “2001: An AI Odyssey (What To Do When AI Goes Rogue).”

The opening keynote was delivered by Subha Madhavan, PhD, FACMI, the Chief Data Scientist at Georgetown University Medical Center, on “Responsible & Ethical Use Of AI For Data-Driven Health.”

Dr. Madhaven’s keynote was followed by the first panel of the day, “Creepy Versus Cool: Striking The Right Balance In Personalization VS Privacy.”

Panelists examined how to leverage data to create deeply personalized, relevant, and contextual experiences, while maintaining trust, privacy, and security of users. Outreach needs to balance personalization with responsible and ethical use of user data. Panelists explored the emotional, legal, and ethical tensions between organisations who want to tailor their products and services to their audience.

Next up was an Impact Keynote from Mike Edmonds, the Managing Director & VP Product at Moonshot by Pactera Digital, on “Continuous Customer Satisfaction.”

wp-image-22744″ />As the modern enterprise emerges to remain a competitive force amid shifting industries, disruptive digital invaders, and transformative business resources (e.g., mobility, cloud, big data, AI), their consumers are demanding more experiences for the betterment of their lives. Delegates were left with a renewed understanding of the customer journey and the importance of an obsessive focus on customer experience, combined with continuous ways of innovating, based on data and AI.

Next there was a dynamic 3-part session on “Addressing the Changing Healthcare Market and Audience.” The segments were designed to help delegates use data and improve digital engagement with senior audiences; how to audit and map the customer experience; and how to use data to drive personalized experiences.

Following the panel was a keynote by Emi Horcada, the Global Head of Design and Digital Transformation Partner at Globant, on “Driving Tangible Transformation – How To Transition Your Organization’s Digital Aspirations Into Action.”

Emi introduced a key framework that can be used to assess an organization’s fitness, and demonstrate how to use that assessment to build a roadmap to achieve digital maturity.

Emi’s keynote was followed by a presentation by Seri Nabeshima, the Chief Global Officer of CDO Club Japan, on “The State Of Digital Transformation In Japan.”

Seri-san shared case studies of successful digital transformation initiatives in Japanese enterprises, and announced the CDO Club Japan’s ‘D20’ summit (the Global Digital 20 Summit) featuring top CDOs from across the globe. This fourth annual Japan CDO Summit will be held in Fukuoka, Japan on June 4-5, 2019, allying with the first-ever G20 summit to be held in Osaka, Japan that same month.

Next up was a Fireside Chat between Janice Ellig, the Chief Executive Officer of Ellig Group, and Lili Gil Valletta, the CEO and Co-founder of CulturIntel and CIEN+, on “Using AI And Cultural Intelligence To Tap Into The Needs And Voice Of The People.”

Lili shared with delegates how her work with F500 companies uses big-data insights to create marketing solutions to help leaders and brands turn cultural trends into opportunities and profits.

The next keynoter was Atif Rafiq, the President of Commercial and Growth at MGM Resorts International (and former CDO at Volvo Cars), who spoke on “5 Lessons Learned On The Path To Digital Disruption.”

At the end of his keynote, CDO Club founder David Mathison presented Atif Rafiq with the U.S. Chief Digital Officer of the Year 2019 award, and also noted Atif’s inclusion in the CDO Club Hall of Fame following his move to President at MGM Resorts. Our Hall of Fame recognizes those CDOs who have become CEO, President, or Board Director/NED.

The second panel of the day covered “Driving Transformation At Scale: How Digital Leaders Are Helping Their Organizations Stay Relevant.”

Moderated by Globant EVP/GM Alejandro Scannapieco, five leading digital and data executives discussed strategies for deploying transformational technology, at scale, as they prepare their organizations for a digital and cognitive revolution.

Following the panel was a keynote by Joyanta Majee, the VP & Head of the Data & Analytics Practice at Orion, on “Data Governance: Springboard For Digital Transformation.”

The least sexy program element can have the greatest impact on implementation. This session explored the critical aspects of data governance that contribute to genuine success at driving digital transformation.

Following Joyanta’s keynote was the final panel of the day, on “Successful Digital Transformation Strategies Across Sectors.”

Panelists explored ‘best practices’ for successful digital transformation across sectors, and identified similarities and differences in dealing with the challenges and opportunities posed by digital disruption.

The closing keynote of the day was delivered by Linda Avery, the Chief Data Officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, on “The Secret Life Of Data: Life lessons in managing and leveraging data as an asset.”

At the end of her keynote, CDO Club founder David Mathison presented Linda with the U.S. Chief Data Officer of the Year 2019 award.
