“We want our digital studio to produce PBS quality—with a YouTube sensibility.”
That’s the goal of Jason Seiken, founder of PBS Digital Studios and one of the digital broadcasting executives attending the first Chief Digital Officer (CDO) Summit held at Thomson Reuters world headquarters at 3 Times Square in New York City in February 2013.
Seiken and three other executives at the Summit’s Broadcasting panel strategized how to be creative and competitive in an increasingly digital broadcasting world.
Seiken’s statement reflected the challenge facing broadcasting CDOs, as they create new forms of programming, integrate digital business practices, and disrupt existing ways of doing business. And they need to do so while maintaining smooth dealings with their more traditional-minded colleagues and legacy parts of their organization.
Joining Seiken on the Broadcasting panel were (from left to right):
- Daniel Heaf: EVP and Managing Digital Director, BBC Worldwide
- Jason Seiken: Founder at PBS Digital Studios (now Chief Content Officer and Editor in Chief at the Telegraph)
- Albert Cheng: EVP & Chief Product Officer, Digital Media at Disney/ABC Television
- Jason Tafler: Chief Digital Officer at Rogers Communications
- Esmeralda Swartz (moderator): Chief Marketing Officer at Metratech

“Sometimes a conference comes along that hits the trifecta – hot topic, high-caliber attendees, and stellar location. The first Chief Digital Officer Summit reached that mark with ease, and I look forward to attending the next one.”

“David, here’s a handy C^3 test for conference value: Did I learn at least three new perspectives? Check. Did I meet at least three interesting people? Check. Did I take back at least three relevant pieces of news I can use? Check. Flying colors for the Chief Digital Officer Summit 2013! Thank you so much, and yes, I’d be very pleased to participate next year!”
