Where the (big data) jobs are: Chief Data Officer JOBS Update for January 2015

“How to Prepare for the Tidal Wave of Big Data Jobs” (SXSW, March 13, 2015)

On Friday, March 13, 2015, CDO Club founder David Mathison participated on a SXSW panel covering big data, Chief Data Officers, and Chief Analytics Officers, titled “How to Prepare for the Tidal Wave of Big Data Jobs.

The panel featured moderator Tracey Wallace (Managing Editor for Bigcommerce), Amen Mashariki (Chief Analytics Officer for the City of NY), and Sree Sreenivasan (CDO for The Metropolitan Museum of Art).

The panel was curated by Umbel, a smart data company that helps monetize and grow premium audiences, as part of a full day of big data sessions at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas. Special thanks to Umbel’s Trips Reddy and Shannon Parks for pulling it all together.

Participants discussed the current big data jobs landscape: which companies and sectors are hiring, select CDO placements in 2014, and what skills are required to succeed in these important roles.

You can view the entire slideshow of Mathison’s presentation here.

Venn Diagram from Mario Faria

To begin the session, Mathison used the accompanying Venn diagram created by Mario Faria, Chief Data Officer at CDO, Inc.

The slide illustrates the similarities and differences between the three main titles (Chief Digital Officer, Chief Data Officer, and Chief Analytics Officer), and where their responsibilities intersect and overlap.

Mario’s infographic is so succinct and clear that the other panelists turned their heads to view it on the screen behind them (see photo below).

Sree even took a photo so he could live-tweet the slide from the stage:

Panelists then discussed the skills required to succeed as a Chief Data Officer, Chief Data Scientist, or Chief Analytics Officer.

In order to explore the requisite skills, Mathison suggested reviewing various job descriptions from the companies that are currently hiring.

Finally, panelists reviewed key global Chief Data and Chief Analytics Officer placements in 2014.

CDOs were hired at News Corp., The New York Times, the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Deutsche Bank, the Department of Transportation, the Federal Reserve Board of New York, GE Capital, Ford Motor Company, the University of Wisconsin, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, among others, as can be seen below:

Panelists noted that the sectors are now aggressively broadening out from the original “digital natives” such as Google, Netflix, Yahoo, and the like, as well as from government and regulated industries (medical, pharma, and financial services, for example) to other, newer sectors, including media, publishing, advertising, automotive, academia, and retail, among others.

The CDO Club projects that this trend will continue, and that CDO hires will soon extend into almost every sector of the global economy.

It’s a replay from the 1980s: The executive suite realized that technology and infrastructure could provide strategic value and competitive advantage, so they created a C-level title to reflect tech’s growing importance – the CIO – and later, the CTO.

Fast-forward 35 years: technology is practically invisible, infrastructure is increasingly outsourced, content is stored in the cloud – and organizations now recognize that data, not infrastructure, is the strategic asset and the lifeblood of business.

Hence the aggressive global recruitment of Chief Data Officers, Chief Data Scientists, Chief Analytics Officers, and Chief Digital Officers.

For these reasons (and others that we’ll explore later), the CDO Club projects that within 3-5 years there will be far more Chief Data Officers (who now number approximately 250 globally) than Chief Digital Officers (some 1,000 globally as of January 1, 2015).

Now all we need are qualified professionals to fill all these open positions!

As mentioned in last week’s post, both IDC and McKinsey are predicting a significant skills shortage in data insights and analytics.

The McKinsey study predicts that by 2018, the U.S. could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 “people with deep analytic skills” as well as 1.5 million “managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.”

Time to polish up your skills – and resumes – CDOs!
